I'm not ashamed to say I'm an adult who bought this book for myself because it's brilliant and I'm learning so much. It may be aimed at children, but it's genuinely suitable for anybody who can read, without being at all patronising or condescending; I would expect nothing less from Stephen and Lucy Hawking. The book is made up of essays from various scientists covering a wide range of topics from relativity and black holes, particle collision, dark matter and dark energy, life on Mars and Schrödinger's Cat, to flat earthers and science deniers. I appreciate the inclusion of anti-vaxers in the section about conspiracy theories, because like myself, Lucy Hawking is autistic and it's a very relevant topic. Most of the illustrations are in black and white, with some colour photos in the middle of the book. I highly recommend this book to everybody, the information I'm learning is staying with me, which isn't always easy for somebody with ADHD. I have since bought a copy for my 11 year old nephew's birthday and his mum said he keeps telling people facts from the book, which I think is great.

Auch andere Betrachtungen waren zu eindimensional.
Die Ausrede, es handle sich um ein Kinder-/Jugendbuch lasse ich nicht gelten.

Das Universum – Was unsere Welt zusammenhält von Lucy & Stephen Hawking

Das Buch ist in 7 Teile aufgeteilt, in jedem dieser Abschnitte wird ein anderes Thema behandelt und vertieft. Wie man dem Titel schon entnehmen kann, geht es in diesem Buch um das Universum, was ein wirklich weit gefasster Begriff ist. Es beinhaltet Texte von verschiedenen Forschern und jeweils kurze Beschreibung zu ihnen, viele von denen kannte man bereits und so war es interessant, mehr über die Personen zu erfahren.
Der Fokus liegt bei dem Buch eher auf den Naturwissenschaften, also wenn Mathematik, Chemie, Physik und co. nicht so eure Themen sind, wäre es vermutlich nicht so spannend für euch.

Am Anfang wird die Entstehung des Universum und der Planeten, der Urknall und somit der Beginn von allem thematisiert. Daraufhin folgte der zweite Teil 'Unsere Erde', man erfuhr dort mehr über die Geschichte unseres Heimatplaneten. Im dritten Teil (mein liebster) ging es um die Erforschung des Universums, also unter anderem um (Exo-)Planeten, Sonnensysteme, Galaxien etc., was ich richtig spannend und faszinierend fand, besonders gut haben mir auch die Bilder dazu gefallen. Dann kam der 4.Teil, welcher die Dunkelheit bzw. Dunkle Energie und Materie, schwarze Löcher und vieles mehr behandelt. Danach erfuhr man einiges über das Leben im Weltraum (Astronauten, Außerirdische, Raketen, Leben auf dem Mars...). Zeitreisen und Wurmlöcher war eins der etwas komplexeren Themen, welches ich trotzdem äußerst interessant fand. In dem siebten und somit letzten Teil geht es um unsere Zukunft. Da dort zu Beginn Roboter sowie künstliche Intelligenzen erklärt wurden musste ich direkt an SciFi Bücher denken. Einem wurde bewusst wie fortgeschritten die Technik heutzutage ist und was für außergewöhnlich Dinge in der Zukunft möglich sein werden. Die Funktionsweise eines Computers,3D Drucker sowie Fahrerlose Autos wurden erläutert. Zum Schluss ging es um alltägliche Themen, wie das Internet, unsere Ernährung, die Politik und am allerwichtigsten um den Klimawandel.

Insgesamt wurden die teilweise komplexen Themen gut verständlich und sehr anschaulich erklärt, sodass es einem wie ein Lehrbuch vorkam, man aber trotzdem Spaß beim Lesen hatte. Komplizierte Theorien und Formeln wurden erläutert, manche anspruchsvoller als andere. Es ist ein wirklich lehrreiches Buch von dem ich vieles lernen und mitnehmen konnte. Man bekam durch die vielen informativen Texte ein besseres Verständnis für die Welt, das Universum und den Menschen selbst. Auch regt das Buch zum nachdenken an, da dort aktuelle Problematiken wie der Klimawandel und die Umweltverschmutzung angesprochen werden. Es ist wie eine Reise durch die Zeit und durch das All. Man reist dort nicht nur in die Vergangenheit, sondern auch in die Zukunft. Toll fand ich es, dass es in dem Buch viele Denkansätze gab, dadurch setzte man sich noch mehr mit den Themen auseinander. Die Autoren motivieren und fordern den Leser indirekt dazu auf die Welt zu verändern und ihr einen Beitrag zu leisten, denn wir – die Jugend sind die Zukunft! 4.5/5 [Werbung|Rezensionsexemplar]

There is no better name for this book than Unlocking the Universe ✨

The book comprises articles written by scholars and is exquisitely designed. It is primarily geared towards children aged 11 and above.

However, there were certain aspects that didn't quite resonate with me.
It felt like some articles were included merely to fill up space, lacking substantial content. The final third of the book, in particular, failed to captivate my interest.
While it's commendable to introduce children to the concept of a 3D printer, it could have been presented in a more engaging manner.
Furthermore, considering the book's publication in 2020-2021, certain information seemed overly simplistic and unstimulating, even for an adult reader.

The abrupt transition from space-related narratives to internet safety in the book's concluding chapters left me puzzled.

Meiner Ansicht nach, beschreibt der Klappentext den Inhalt dieses Buches perfekt. Es werden einige wichtige und allen voran spannende Fragen rund um das Thema Universum vereinfacht erklärt und anhand von Skizzen, Illustrationen und sogar ein paar schönen Farbfotos dargestellt. Die einzelnen Beiträge sind übersichtlich, kurz und doch prägnant. Ich habe durch dieses Buch viele neue Dinge erfahren und staune noch immer über all das Gigantische.
Herausgeber dieses Buches ist die Tochter des berühmten Astrophysikers Stephen Hawking, doch in diesem Buch befinden sich von vielen verschiedenen Wissenschaftlern Beiträge und Erfahrungsberichte – auch von Stephen Hawking selbst. Das fand ich besonders toll und sorgt auch für etwas Abwechslung.
Das Buch muss jedoch keinesfalls chronologisch oder gar komplett gelesen werden. Auch ich habe mich lediglich erstmal nur mit Themen auseinandergesetzt, die mich besonders fasziniert haben – doch insgesamt finde ich alle aufgeführten Inhalte interessant, weshalb ich mir auch all die anderen Themen noch näher anschauen werde.
Das Cover passt perfekt zum Titel und zum Inhalt des Buches. Aber auch die Aufmachung finde ich besonders toll. All die Illustrationen, hochwertigen Fotos und Skizzen geben den Beiträgen von den unterschiedlichsten Wissenschaftlern eine persönliche Note. Dadurch konnte ich mich umso mehr für all die Themen begeistern als ohnehin schon.
Allerdings stelle ich mir die Frage, ob dieses Werk wirklich bereits für Kinder ab 10 Jahren geeignet ist. All die Theorien und Darstellungen sind im Vergleich zu einem wissenschaftlichen Fachbuch zwar schon sehr stark vereinfacht, dennoch tauchen viele Fachbegriffe auf, auf die meist nicht näher eingegangen wird und ein Zusammenhang ist ebenfalls schwer zu erkennen.
Nichtsdestotrotz finde ich dieses Buch sehr interessant, und selbst wenn ein Kind im Alter von 10 Jahren eine tiefe Begeisterung für dieses komplexe Thema verspürt, sollte das im Großen und Ganzen schon klappen.
„Das Universum. Was unsere Welt zusammenhält“ ist übrigens der 4. Band der „Das Universum“-Reihe, das man allerdings unabhängig voneinander lesen kann.
Ich vergebe diesem beeindruckendem Buch 5/5 Sterne und kann es wirklich jedem empfehlen, der sich bisschen Allgemeinwissen rund um das Universum aneignen möchte. Egal ob jung oder alt, man lernt einfach nie aus. :)

Jam-packed with facts, figures, mind-boggling and fun ideas about all things science, space, black holes, AI, robots, and what not! This also includes interesting essays from world-famous scientists and astronauts. And it's illustrated! 😍

"Unlocking the Universe" is actually a compilation of the non-fic part of the famous children's series "George's Adventures" which was written by Stephen Hawking and his daughter Lucy Hawking. This is mainly meant for children (I am children 🙌) but I think not! It's super informative, even for adults, and I think the simple language helps in understanding even the most mind-bending of ideas 🤪🤯

I thoroughly enjoyed it. Recommended for absolutely everyone who wants to know more about space 🤗🌌

Für mich würde das Buch zum Jahreshighlight werden, wenn das letzte große Kapitel anders aufgebaut wäre. Ich habe einige Bücher von Hawking gelesen und doch ist dieses anders, verständlicher und bildlicher (und das ist schon mal super!). Mich persönlich gefällt die Aufmachung sehr! Nicht nur die Illustrationen, sondern der Aufbau (drei/vier Zeiten: Astronomen, Astronauten, menschliche Denker und die Zukunft). Neben Texten von Hawking wurden auch Artikel von anderen Wissenschaftlern aufgegriffen, die das Universum erklären (auch top!, mal das Universum aus anderen Perspektiven zu betrachten).
Aufgrund meines Vorwissens aus anderen Büchern konnte ich die ein oder anderen fehlenden Informationen in mein Wissen einordnen. Das letzte große Kapitel hätte einfach anders aufgebaut werden müssen, damit mich das Buch komplett gecatcht hätte.

✨Review time✨-Unlocking the Universe
So I don't often read non-fiction, buuuut I felt like reading something sci-fi and since they didn't have anything interesting at the bookstore I decided to go for this. It was fun, but my feelings are very mixed.

The book is both narrated and featuring a lot of essays on the topic. The topics range from the creation of the universe, our solar system, computers and future.

The essays in the book seem very disconnected, as many of them include explanations for things that were already said, The Goldilocks zone for example gets explained in every single chapter about space or after 10 pages dedicated to Alan Touring and his machine we get a re-explanation in the next essay. I don't know if these essays were even meant for this book, but I feel like they should be more coordinated.

The essays are sometimes very patronising, and I think that even kids don't need some of these explanations. There is a two page explanation of what a computer is in very rudimentary terms, is there really a kid reading this that doesn't know that personal computers are controlled with keys ? or that most homes have them ?

Some essays feel very different and distinct from the other and present a unique view on the topic, but most of them feel like filler to me and only re-phrase what was already said. The parts written by the authors are very good on the other hand, managing to explain even difficult topics in simple terms, while still having a wide appeal for any kind of reader.

Other pet peeves include a seemingly unnecessary use of exclamation marks. This might just be me but some statements just have exclamation marks and I wondered why. And this, just like Mythos but to a lesser extent, has my favourite footnotes pointing to other pages... I'm starting to think this is a penguin thing, but NO no one needs to know that this topic will be discussed further on the next page, and yes I know this was discussed 20 pages ago, I...uhh...you know READ THAT PART.

The essays aren't bad, they just feel very patronising and sometimes annoying, more coordination between writers or better editing would make this book a five star, it's getting four because it was a fun revision for me and I would've loved this book when I was in primary school.

Das Universum von Lucy und Steven Hawkins.
Gekürzte Version.

Dieses Hörbuch/Sachbuch liegt schon etwas länger zur Rezension bei uns. Der Grund dafür ist seine Komplexität und sein Umfang. 6 CDs voll gepackt mit Wissen warten auf interessierte Kinder und Erwachsene.

Meine 15jährige ist recht wissenschaftlich interessiert und ich dachte, dieses Hörbuch könnte ihr gefallen, um so überraschter war ich, dass meine 6jährige darauf ansprang. Während also meine Große nicht die Ruhe und Konzentration aufbrachte, um mehr als einer CD zu folgen, saß ich mit meiner Jüngsten zusammen und lauschte den zugegebenermaßen angenehmen Stimmen der beiden Sprecher.

Der Inhalt der CDs erklärt beginnend mit kleinsten Teilchen über Planeten bis zur Erde einfach alles. Obwohl kindgerecht erklärt, gibt es Sequenzen voller wissenschaftlicher Fakten, deren Masse schnell überfordert. Ich denke auch, dass meine Tochter viel verstanden hat, aber die Menge an Infos hat sie etwas überfordert. Nun ist sie noch keine 10 Jahre, wie die Altersempfehlung. Aus diesem Grund haben wir einzelne CDs teilweise öfter gehört bzw. in Abständen, um das ganze Wissen zu verarbeiten. Das hat natürlich gedauert, aber ich wollte auch vorher keine Bewertung abgeben.

Wissenschaftlich interessierten Kindern und auch Erwachsenen, die ihr Wissen erweitern oder auffrischen wollen, sind mit diesem Hörbuch gut beraten. Die Altersempfehlung ist nicht verkehrt, aber man sollte sicher sein, dass man sein Kind nicht damit überfordert, denn es erfordert viel Konzentration und Auffassungsgabe.

Das Hörbuch gibt es auch als Hardcover Ausgabe.

It covers awide range of scientific topics. But it lightly touches on all of them, in the simplest way. It's understandable, since it's meant for kids. Yet, as an adult reader, I felt it could have been a bit more in-depth.

A really good book for all if you want to explore many scientific aspects : physics (a lot of physics!!), earth science, genetics, computer science... Each subject is explained by a different scientist and illustrated.

Fun and informative, it was a joy to learn many new things throughout this book

Es geht, wie der Titel schon erahnen lässt, um das Universum und so ziemlich alles, was dazugehört.
Selbst Themen wie Zeitreisen, Verschwörungstheorien, KI, Klimawandel und soziale Medien werden angesprochen.
Moment mal - soziale Medien?

Ja, die Inhalte sind sehr breit gefächert.

So bleiben wir nicht nur auf dem Gebiet der Naturwissenschaften, sondern erhalten auch kleine Einblicke in philosophische oder politische Sichtweisen.
Superspannend, aber auch sehr vielfältig. Vielleicht ein bisschen zu vielfältig.

Man bekommt einen guten Überblick über die Entstehung, Entwicklung und Erforschung des Universums inklusive Infos zu Planeten, schwarzen Löchern, Leben im Weltraum und Gefahren für unseren Planeten.
Um alle Themen ausreichend zu vertiefen, waren es allerdings einfach zu viele.

Manches wusste ich bereits, anderes war mir neu und umso interessanter, einiges habe ich nur überflogen.

Das bringt mich zur Frage der Zielgruppe.
Die leicht verständliche Sprache, manche ganz grundlegende Informationen und die liebevolle Gestaltung des Buches deuten darauf hin, dass es eher für die jüngere Generation gedacht ist, also wahrscheinlich für Schüler*innen.
Andererseits fand ich dafür einige Kapitel sehr komplex.
Wenn es um irgendwelche Berechnungen und Formeln ging, wäre wohl so ziemlich jede*r Siebtklässler*in ausgestiegen.
Ich übrigens auch.

Über einige Themen erhält man nur einen Überblick, andere werden detaillierter behandelt, ein paar hätte man meiner Meinung nach ganz rauslassen können.
Als es zum Beispiel um die Gefahren des Internets ging, hatte ich das Gefühl, dass diese Themen angesprochen wurden, weil junge Menschen darüber Bescheid wissen sollten, den Zusammenhang mit dem eigentlichen Thema des Buches habe ich da aber nicht mehr gesehen.

Wie schon Brief answers to the big questions kann ich auch dieses Buch wieder empfehlen, wenn man an dem Thema interessiert ist und eine Lektüre sucht, die leicht verständlich, aber sehr informativ ist.

Lucy & Stephen Hawking's "Unlocking the Universe" is an attempt to solve the puzzle of the vast universe and make it as simple as possible.

From the primary model of solar system to a peek in the future, you name it this book have it.

Icing on the cake are the illustrations by Jan Bielecki, which not only beautifully but also aptly described everything.

The book brought back some school memories and I loved brushing up on the things I was aware of along with an entire treasure trove of new knowledge.

I really enjoyed this book for information about the world we live in. I had never read a book that was like this book before so when I started it, it was a whole new experience. I gave this book 3/5 stars because the information in it was really good and very interesting but it wasn't my kind of thing that I would read again.

This incredible book is actually meant for children that are fascinated by science, but I found myself intrigued in it as well. I learned a lot about space, quantum physics and got a brief look to the future. It was written, designed and translated to Estonian very well.

Oto książka idealna na początek kosmicznej przygody! "Przewodnik po Wszechświecie" doskonale nada się na prezent dla młodej osoby, która odkrywa w sobie pasję do fizyki, nauk ścisłych i astronomii. Nada się też - oczywiście - dla każdego, kto nie czytał wiele o Kosmosie, ale kto by chciał temat zgłębić możliwie szeroko i poznać najważniejsze zagadnienia i odkrycia w tej dziedzinie. To książka pisana zrozumiałym, bardzo przystępnym językiem, a naszymi przewodnikami są znakomici, światowej sławy naukowcy, którzy w poszczególnych częściach prowadzą nas przez zawiłości nieograniczonych przestrzeni i ograniczonych - w tejże przestrzeni - umysłów.
Dostajemy tu wiedzę w pigułce. Mamy krótkie bio ważnych osobistości, takich jak Albert Einstein, Richard Feynman, Ludwig Boltzmann i in. bardzo mi się podoba ta przejrzystość i przekrojowość, które pozwalają czytelnikowi zdobyć mocny fundament i świetnie wystartować do dalszych poszukiwań, lub po prostu na tej jednej książce skończyć swą przygodę z naprawdę solidną wiedzą ogólną. Jeśli chodzi o to, co mi się nie podobało - a jest tylko jedna taka rzecz - to opis "odkrycia" Alana Turinga. Uważam, że hańbą, a może po prostu chamstwem jest rozpisywanie się nad jego geniuszem nie zaznaczywszy, że nic by nie zdziałał bez Polaków... oczywiście chodzi mi o ENIGMĘ. To jedyny ból, jaki towarzyszył mi przy czytaniu tej książki, bo wszystko inne bardzo mi się podobało.
Uważam, że w rewelacyjny sposób scharakteryzowano poszczególne planety naszego Układu Słonecznego, nie pomijając przy tym planet karłowatych, księżyców, oraz innych ciał niebieskich. Dla początkującego jest to czyste złoto, nic tylko chłonąć, chłonąć i chłonąć... tylko trzeba uważać, by nie pochłonęła Cię czarna dziura. I oczywiście o czarnych dziurach również tu czytamy, jak i o wszystkim co ciemne w naszym Wszechświecie - zadziwiająco dużo tego... jak w życiu - co nie? (puszczam oczko)
Na uwagę zasługują także teksty traktujące o nowoczesnej technologii, o wizjach przyszłości, inteligentnych maszynach, robotach... są to sprawy niby odległe, ale czy rzeczywiście? Ludzkość w przeciągu stu lat dokonała ogromnego postępu, niektórzy mówią, że staliśmy się niewolnikami technologii (z czym się zgadzam), a inni kochają postęp i prą dalej (co też lubię, tylko kibicuję, by przy tym wyścigu nie tracić rozumu - przewrotnie).
Na koniec wspomnę o wydaniu, pięknym, w twardej oprawie, z fascynującą kolorystyką, zaś w środku znajdziemy na ka��dej stronie ilustracje a w centrum, na kredowym papierze piękne fotografie. "Przewodnik po Wszechświecie" to pozycja doskonała na prezent i na początek przygody z ty tematem. Myślę, że wielu może zainspirować, a to już zasługuje na wielkie oklaski.

I've had a Brief History of Time sitting on my shelf for, oh, two decades or so and it's still untouched. After reading Unlocking the Universe, at least I finally can say I've read something by Stephen Hawking…

It's a very accessibly written 101 book about the universe. Before this book, I was vaguely familiar with the concepts of the Big Bang, what a solar system refers to, what a galaxy and comet are, etc from reading Charlie Brown's Encyclopaedia as a kid. Unlocking the Universe gave a more in depth layman's explanation of these concepts and more - like the Goldilocks Zone, dark matter and energy, black holes (things can escape from them!) and singularities, and features on each of the planets in our solar system.

I read Liu Cixin's the Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy this past year and I must say reading Unlocking the Universe gave me a better appreciation of the science behind the science fiction - concepts like a multiverse, wormholes and time travel. That said, having read what is probably one of the more accessibly written books with some of the most illustrious names in the field, I fear that concepts like quantum theory, Schrodinger's cat are probably always going to remain a mystery for me.

While I enjoyed the book overall, it ended on a bit of a low note for me. Part Seven of the book deals with the future and I found the essays on robots, robot ethics, AI, 3D printing, climate change, driverless cars, the future of food, the future of politics, etc etc a bit of a hodge podge that didn't cohere with the rest of the book (or with each other for that matter)

Interesting scientifically accurate and up-to-date read for the whole family. Perhaps a good-night read for an English speaking family. Sadly I was rather disappointed by the magnificent essays that were not accompanied by nice and accurate astrophotography or even realistic artworks. Instead the illustrations were not very kid-friendly and didn't illustrate much of the text. Was it really that hard to take some pictures from the public domain photo banks of NASA? Like some views of the ISS, the Earth, deserts, dunes, oceans, planets, astrophotography, whatever fantastic thing was described on the page.

Furthermore, the organization of the chapters is annoyingly random. There is some talk of the Drake's equation, then zero-G flights, then space probes. Umm, what? I can only surmise every chapter, essay, is meant as a good night story to the little ones, but there is nothing for them to look at the same time. Also it is sadly in English, not translated into Estonian. So as a foreign parent, you need to translate on the go. Then again, perhaps soon it's not a big deal, with ChatGPT and friends automating the whole translation?

There is much more to the book than meets the eye. It is one of the most accessible book on Science for people. A must have reference guide for all the people who want to know a little more about the world we live in and the world we are moving into.

The book has vast amount of information ranging from Big Bang to Climate Change. It talks about future and hopes for a civilisation which has capable scientists who solve the major issues we have right now. It can be "you". It is possible to be lost and overwhelmed by the amount of issues we have but a small step, just a single small step will add to the solution. Till we find an alternative to Earth there is no plan B. One of the best books in recent times.

Firstly, even though I'm adults I have this book just because I love science.

This book just incredible and I'm learning so much from this book. Even though I know many of the things already.

Basically, this book is for children and mid-age who wants to explore the universe

But to be honest, anyone can read who loves science.

This book cover hell lot of topics like

Etc.

The best thing about the book is illustrated pages' thoughts It black and white only.

This is the best one to gift for a child.

It's a kind of book that you need to know to travel through space.

From the 1st page was like omg!
Information and knowledge are just at the next levels.

When you finish this book you will become much aware of universe.

I found this to be a really interesting and inspiring book. I found that the wide range of authors writing on a wide range of topics (predominantly astrophysics, but also things like computing, genetics and even politics) solved a problem I often have with non-fiction; I enjoy learning new things, but I find many non-fictions to be lengthy and dull. This was certainly lengthy (it took me almost a month to get through!) but was still very much enjoyable.
In a few chapters here and there, it was quite obvious that some of the authors weren’t particularly experienced in teaching their subjects, however these were few and far between, and often my lack of understanding was just a fault on my part!
Overall, would definitely recommend! It’s aimed towards children/teenagers, however I can certainly see adults benefiting from reading this a lot.

Ein wirklich interessantes Buch, was durch die Vielzahl der einzelnen Autoren eine Vielfalt an Themengebieten und vor allem Perspektiven bietet!
Selbst komplexe Themen werden anschaulich erklärt und besonders schön war zu beobachten, wie das Buch dazu gemacht ist, Faszination bei den Leser*innen zu erwecken. Am Ende vieler Kapitel finden sich anregende Gedankengänge, sowie der Appell, selbst mitzuwirken.
Für mich persönlich war die Gewichtung der Themen an manchen Stellen nicht genug ausgewogen, beispielsweise wäre eine Ausführung zum Themengebiet Wurmlöcher und Schwarze Löcher wünschenswert gewesen.
Fairerweise muss man allerdings auch anmerken, dass das Buch des Weiterem viele Themengebiete abdeckt, die man beim Titel zunächst nicht erwarten würde z.B. eine Prognose über die Zukunft unserer Ernährung.

Bereits der Titel verrät, dass es in „Das Universum- Was unsere Welt zusammenhält“ um viele verschiedene Themen rund um das Universum geht. Meiner Meinung nach war das Buch sehr aufschlussreich und enthält einige interessante Fakten. Das Buch ist super verständlich geschrieben und man es kann ohne Probleme verstehen. Zwischendurch gibt es immer wieder Zeichnungen, die einem die Gedankengänge des Textes verdeutlichen. Außerdem sind immer wieder Seiten zu finden, wo erklärt wurde, wer z.B bestimmte Forscher*innen oder Wissenschaftler*innen sind, was mir auch sehr gut gefallen hat! Insgesamt ist das Buch super für alle, die wissen wollen, was in unserer Welt (und im Universum) vor sich geht.
