Walsh in fact does deny it was of his making blaming writers in general and one paper in particular for the difficulty He contends that instead of reporting the news we were creating the news For sake let us agree Let us say we of the fourth estate invented the Joe Montana vs Steve Young situation out of whole cloth Let us say we were biased and uninformed So what does it matter now that the 49ers are going to the Super Bowl that Walsh is being hailed as a genius that the fans of San Francisco are enthralled with the results? To Walsh it matters a great deal Please see WALSH Page 29 49ers Bill takes the criticism personally as if we were questioning his manhood instead of merely his strategy Why I cannot say Walsh is an urbane intelligent often jocular being He draws up plays that cannot be stopped and tosses out one-liners that be topped reached the peak of his profession even making the big bucks And yet he wants sycophants not sportswriters Walsh has been at it long enough to understand the nature of his job And our jobs Bill Bradley played basketball for the New York Knicks Now he plays pivot for the US Senate metaphorically The press and the athlete or coach are according to Bradley inextricably locked in a dance COMMENTARY from which neither can escape The relationship is adversarial but the results may often be functional Walsh has always been a splendid loser In defeat he is properly humble giving credit to the opposition and deprecating himself But in triumph the demons seem to take charge More than just accept accolades he rattles skeletons Walsh is hardly the modern-day Field Marshal Montgomery of whom Churchill said: defeat unbeatable in victory But success does bring on arrogance elation appears to come as much from taunting his critics as winning the contest The 49ers had a quarterback controver a funny world out there A man is not content to be great he must be told he is great Whether that the fault of the man or the world remains grist for many a mill Is Bill Walsh an excellent football coach? lost three of their last four COLLEGE BASKETBALL HERSHEY The new-look Dayton Dynamo nearly made the Hershey Impact pay for their overconfidence The Impact fell behind 4-0 before rallying for an 8-6' victory last night Midfielder Franklin McIntosh had a hat trick for Hershey which moved into a third-place tie in the American Indoor Soccer Association standings with Milwaukee Both clubs are 10-8 The Dynamo who acquired four new players in the past week are in last place in the AISA very tough to motivate the team to play against admitted Hershey coach Niki Nikolic saw Dayton on the bottom (of Householder SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT Frankie Thompson is the newest member of the York County Racing Club Hall of Fame in the past driver category Thompson was honored yesterday at Wisehaven Hall in York as the YCRC held its annual Hall of Fame awards banquet Nearly four hundred people attended the affair to see NASCAR driver Harry Gant and to see several local racing personalities including Thompson honored Thompson raced on the local circuit in the late 1950s and early 1960s He drove several cars and scored numerous wins including three straight track championships at Port Royal Thompson also spent some time racing with NASCAR and raced on the old beach course in Daytona The past ownermechanic hon-oree was Hanover furniture dealer OJ Myers Myers sponsored several race cars but met most of EDITOR Nearly eight months have passed since Harry Gant slammed into the wall at Charlotte NC Motor Speedway shattering his leg One of many Winston Cup drivers who became accident victims caused by last controversy Gant still sports a cast on his left leg had two operations the most recent resulting in doctors inserting an eight-inch steel plate in his leg and continues to need crutches Despite the handicap though he plans on a full racing schedule this year with his sights set on winning premier event the Daytona 500 next month He just hopes the tire problems that plagued the circuit last
