Green Gym is not a gym!
If sweaty gyms are not for you, why not join this friendly group? The Green Gym work in the open air, which is great for mental and physical health, giving nature a helping hand at the same time - they also maintain the diversity of habitats at the nature reserve. There are a variety of tasks from digging out brambles to planting wildflowers and clearing ivy from gravestones and paths. You can also learn to do more specialised tasks like hedge laying, coppicing and scything. There is something suitable for everyone and you can work at your own pace.
Sessions every Wednesday and the last Saturday of the month 10am to 1pm. Tea break at 11.30. You can leave at any time
About the role:
• All equipment is provided, but wear old clothes because you will probably get dirty.
• Clearing brambles and ivy in woodland and meadows to allow flowers to grow.
• Sowing wildflower seeds and planting bulbs.
• Cutting fallen tree branches and making woodpiles and dead hedges.
• Coppicing hazels (in winter).
• Laying hedges (in winter).
• Litter picking.
• Finding and clearing specific graves for relatives, as required.
• Making paths through The Wilderness.
Norman Road is a controlled parking zone. Parking, paid by phone, is only available for 2 hours. There is a disabled space, where blue badge holders can park for 3 hours.
Accessibility:
The site has wheelchair access on a network of paths. Some tasks can be done from the paths.
Disabled toilet, kitchen and small classroom on the ground floor of visitor centre, when the building is in use. Unfortunately, access to the first floor is by stairs. There is no lift. Disabled Badge holders – parking for 3 hours by main gate in Norman Road. Guide dogs for the blind welcome. All dogs to be kept under control, and all waste cleared up.
No dress code. Long trousers and long sleeves are advised because there are stinging nettles and prickly plants.

We are a small, friendly group, who like to work outside, helping nature. It is a good opportunity to get out and make friends in an interesting, but safe environment.
You will be able to learn how to use tools such as axes and scythes and do specialised tasks like hedge laying.
We always break for tea, biscuits and chat. Sometimes there is cake!

Tube: East Ham – 1.5 miles Turn left out of the station and walk down High Street North and High Street South. Pass East Ham Fire Station on the right and Norman Road is 2nd left.Docklands Light Railway: Beckton 0.9 miles Walk south on Newark Knok. Turn right onto Peverel. At the roundabout take the first exit onto Woolwich Manor Way A117. Cross the A13 and Norman road is 1st on the right.Bus: 101, 104, 474, 300 all go from East Ham tube station to the Nature Reserve.
